Armstrong Partners to Start IHI Student Chapter
(September 21, 2011) Armstrong Atlantic State University’s College of Health Professions, Mercer University’s School of Medicine, and South University have collaborated to start the Savannah Student Chapter of a national organization, Institute for Health Care Improvement (IHI). The local chapter will promote health care excellence among students and promote a safer and more efficient health care system.
Chapter members will be able to get perspective from two distinguished physicians this month. Dr. Michael Leonard, a physician leader for patient safety at Kaiser Permanente, will speak to the students at 1 p.m., on September 23 at Memorial University Medical Center’s Medical Education Auditorium. Additionally, Dr. Ramon Meguiar, senior vice president and chief medical officer at Memorial University Medical Center, will address the students at 6:30 p.m., September 29 at Memorial’s Medical Education Auditorium.
Dr. Don Berwick and others founded the IHI in the late 1980s with a commitment to improve the health care system. The original work of IHI included the 100,000 Lives Campaign and 5 Million Lives Campaign that helped to share best practice changes at thousands of hospitals throughout the country and established a national network.
“This student chapter provides an opportunity for all healthcare professions to work together to improve healthcare,” said Janet Buelow, Armstrong professor of health sciences who also serves as faculty advisor to the chapter. “Students early in their careers can gain experience and practice the best and safest care possible. Armstrong health professions students expected to join in the events of the chapter come from the fields of nursing, radiological sciences, public health, respiratory therapy, medical laboratory science, speech and language pathology, physical therapy, nursing and health administration. Resident physicians from Mercer University and physician assistants, nurses, pharmacy and health administration students from South University will also participate in this initiative.”
