2012-13 Common Read Kick-Off Event
(Aug. 18, 2012) In a world practically fatigued with choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the 2012-13 Armstrong Common Read program addresses those choices and encourages the community to look more deeply into the food we eat. The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by bestselling author Michael Pollan, offers an absorbing narrative for students, faculty, staff and the greater Savannah community about where our meals really come from. The Common Read has been assigned in a variety of courses, from history to chemistry and health promotions to graphic design.
The kickoff event for the program will take place on Aug. 29 at noon in the Fine Arts Auditorium and will present a panel of notable sustainable-food advocates from the region. The panel will be moderated by David Lake, Armstrong professor of rehabilitation sciences, and will include the following panelists who each have a unique perspective on the topic.
• Arianne McGinnis, co-founded Hope Grow Farms, a successful pasture-based livestock farm in Sylvania, Ga., and now works with Revival Foods, a Savannah-based distribution company committed to honoring and preserving the food, farmers and food ways of the Deep South.
• Kristan and Sean Fretwell, both Armstrong graduates, are deeply involved with Hunter Cattle, a “pastured and sustainable” farm that raises cattle, hogs and chickens without giving them antibiotics, hormones or caging them. Kristan conducts the tours at Hunter Cattle, which is owned by her parents, Dell and Debra Ferguson. Sean works in the College of Education at Georgia Southern University and speaks frequently on food issues.
• Wendy Armstrong is a former yacht chef who opened Thrive, Savannah’s only green-certified restaurant, on Whitemarsh Island in May 2008. Wendy also hosts a series of sustainable dinners at Thrive on a monthly basis, each focusing on local sustainable producers of meats, produce and seafood.
Additional events throughout the 2012-13 year for The Omnivore’s Dilemma will provide a particularly insightful and multi-faceted approach to some of the most talked about topics of the day—responsible diet, sustainable food sources and mindful consumption. The Common Read is sure to strike up campus-wide conversations that will continue throughout the school year.
